Hi there! I’m very happy to share one of my favorite recipes, Spicy Thai Basil Shrimp. This dish originates from Thailand and features a fantastic combination of fresh Thai basil, succulent shrimp, and spicy chilies. It’s special because it captures the bold flavors of Thai cuisine in a simple, quick-to-make meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 Thai red chilies, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced thinly
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges (for garnish)

Substitutions and Variations:

  • If you can’t find Thai basil, regular basil can be used.
  • For less heat, use fewer chilies or opt for a milder variety.
  • Swap shrimp with chicken or tofu for a different protein.

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oil: Add the vegetable oil to the preheated wok.
  2. Cook the Aromatics: Add minced garlic and Thai chilies to the wok. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add the Vegetables: Toss in the sliced onion and red bell pepper. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they start to soften.
  4. Add the Shrimp: Push the vegetables to the side and add the shrimp to the center of the wok. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the shrimp turn pink and opaque.
  5. Mix in the Sauces: Pour in the fish sauce, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar. Stir everything together until well combined.
  6. Add Thai Basil: Turn off the heat and toss in the fresh Thai basil leaves. Stir until the basil wilts.

Notes

Avoid overcooking the shrimp as it can make them tough and chewy.
